Avverbi

Da giovane odiavo gli avverbi. Bastava incontrarne uno in un testo e GULP, cervello stomaco e respiro si fermavano. Sul baratro della nausea. Se poi il testo era letterario: STRAGULP E SBARAQUACK, chiudevo il libro per sempre.  Ora me so' dato 'na calmata. Sono diventato tollerante. Sono invecchiato. Certi fanatismi non li adotto più. Semmai li conservo insieme alle cassette TDK, ai dischi in vinile degli Smiths e alle copertine del Guerin Sportivo.

Con l'eccezione di fortemente. Se qualcuno usa fortemente in un testo scritto o pronunciato, con me ha chiuso: non è più un mio autore e io non sono più un suo lettore. E se la merita tutta. Certo, non è che adesso gli avverbi mi siano diventati simpatici. E quanto alla coloritura e pulizia di un testo, credo avesse ragione da vendere quel matto di Horacio Quiroga, che nella settima regola del suo decalogo prescriveva:

"No adjetives sin necesidad. Inútiles serán cuantas colas de color adhieras a un sustantivo débil. Si hallas el que es preciso, él solo tendrá un color incomparable. Pero hay que hallarlo".

Non aggettivare se non ce n'è bisogno. Sottrarre piuttosto che aggiungere. Stringere la cinghia nel banchetto del lessico. Ferma convinzione di noialtri quirogiani (o quiroghiani?). Poi però capitano articoli che ti mettono in crisi. Come ad esempio questo di Lily Rothman su The Atlantic, Why I Am Proudly, Strongly, and Happily in Favor of Adverbs, che già dal titolo si capisce da che parte sta. In barba a tutte le regole di stile e retorica, Lily sguaina la spada, impugna la penna e difende l'avverbio. Qualche estratto dalle RothmanArgomentazioni:

Adverbs don't just make a sentence memorable, they change its meaning.

Examples abound. Without "lightly," we would be having breakfast at Tiffany with Holly Go. Without "darkly," we would not know how we see through a glass. Without "merrily," we would row, row, row a boat down a stream and think it a nightmare. We still wouldn't give a damn, just as Rhett Butler didn't in Margaret Mitchell's original Gone With the Wind, but without the addition of "frankly" we wouldn't have one of the top movie quotes of all time.

Only by reading can you know when an adverb belongs in a phrase and when it belongs in the trash. Then you can write beautifully.
